Pruning Bush Roses

What are you trying to achieve?

What you are doing is to cut out some of the old flowering wood from last year. This will encourage fresh new shoots to grow and flower in the summer.

What do you do in the Spring?

First, take out any dead, weak or old shoots.

Then remove any that are growing into the middle or rubbing against other shoots.

Then cut the remaining healthy shoots back to about 6 in (15cm) from the ground.

Remember, always cut just above an outward pointing bud.

What next?

Feed and mulch immediately after pruning. Click here for more details.

What do you do in the summer?

To encourage a second flowering, nip off any fading blooms. Remember to feed in late June/early July.
